New Release: Atlas of Endangered Languages

Nearly 7,000 languages are spoken worldwide – but half of them could disappear by the end of the century. With each lost language, not only unique words and grammatical structures vanish, but also valuable knowledge and cultural identity.

The recently published "Atlas der vom Aussterben bedrohten Sprachen" (Atlas of Endangered Languages), written by Arnfrid Schenk and Stefan Schnell and published by DuMont Buchverlag, presents 50 endangered languages from around the world, including North Frisian, Lower Sorbian, Low German, Romansh, and Basque. Maps, infographics, and essays vividly illustrate why languages are dying out and what can be done to preserve them.

The book is available in German.
